Literature Research Review

Improvements in Performance of All Solid State Batteries Through Research on Interfaces

Produced under Dr S E Dutton of Dutton Research Group, -

  • Interrogated primary literature via the web and library resources.
  • Developed the critical faculties to summarise, explain and present an informed view of the state of knowledge in the research field. Distinguishing between widely known/accepted views and more speculative/less developed theories.
  • Presented the work in an appropriate style: in formal writing (utilising LaTeX text-processing package) and orally (in an interview presentation to professors).

Experiments

Coherence and Information in a Fibre Interferometer

Conducted under Dr Tijmen Euser of the NanoPhotonics Centre, -

Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy: Oxidation of Graphite: Kinetics on the Atomic Scale

Conducted under Dr David Ward, -

  • Computed simulations from theoretical literature contrasted with experimental results.
  • Collected data from niche devices to analyse with Python, but also specialist software too.
  • Devised experiments to: test established theory, verify equipment specifications, investigate physics of fringe cases and isolate behaviour in differing time scales.
  • Automated data collection and deduced suitable sampling windows to account for errors.

Employment

Tax Accountant

Employed at Justa & Co. Certified Accountants Ltd., -

  • Calculated and Submitted Capital Gain Returns for sales of properties and cryptoassets in accordance with HMRC policies and maximising allowances for tax-efficiency.
  • Created a faster workflow for processing bank statements, invoices and ledgers to be coded and integrated into the existing Sage accounting software environment.
  • Optimised Excel spreadsheet templates for tripling processing speed & stability and added documentation for subsequent annual adjustments to tax allowances.
  • Established a server archival system for client documents received from client meetings, postage, emails and messaging apps, solving a backlog issue of >1000 clients.
  • Took interim managerial role of Personal Tax department in senior manager absence in the approach to the annual tax deadline: met/interacted with the bulk of clients (~25/day); was main liaison with other departments and international office, audited & revised prepared accounts and delegated accounts to staff to balance workloads & train a well-rounded team.

SEN Teacher

Employed at Next Gen AP & New Dawn School Ltd., -

  • Plan and teach well-structured lessons to assigned classes, following the school's plans, curriculum and schemes of work.
  • Assess, monitor, record and report on the learning needs, progress and achievements of assigned pupils, making accurate and productive use of assessment.
  • Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of pupils.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of the school's policies, practices and procedures, so as to support the school's vision and values.
  • Maintain good order and discipline among pupils, managing behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment.
  • Contribute to the recruitment and professional development of other teachers and support staff.
  • Work in line with statutory safeguarding guidance (e.g. Keeping Children Safe in Education, Prevent) and our safeguarding and child protection policies.

Other Experiences

Academic Poster Conference

Online Conference at the Cavendish Laboratory,

Formed a group with three other physicists with the goal to introduce the wave nature of light phenomena to first year and prospective undergraduate physics students at the university.

We produced an academic poster for the Lent Term 2021 conference and gave presentations, which met the scrutiny of senior academic staff.

In the process we worked remotely as a group, utilising the Google Workspaces for real-time collaboration, during pandemic restrictions.

Team work involved: delegating responsibilities, documenting progress, constructively improving each other's contributions, discussing the scientific literature and test screening our explanations with target audiences.

STEP Preparation Course

University of Leicester Advanced Mathematics Support Programme & STEP Preparation Course, -

Worked in groups with other students to tackle in-depth problems together while receiving and criticism from graduates, discussed the effectiveness of techniques and diagnosed problem structures and used math concepts far beyond A-level to solve new problems.

Working alongside peers in a completely different style to typical schoolwork, talking through the problems, and explaining to each other our different approaches at roadblocks; greatly developed my team-working abilities and communication skills. I became more versatile at approaching tasks and use feedback more effectively.

Budding Brunnels

Construction industry programme with Willmott Dixon at De Montfort University,

Met and interviewed people involved with every step of construction, from the project managers, architects and sustainability officers and construction site managers. I developed better communication skills and an understanding of the logistics and admin that goes into planning and construction as well as the importance of different roles.

Visited the construction site for Fullhurst Community College and got to see first-hand the organisation into which different teams of contractors had to work.

Participated in a team project where we designed a college to a specification and pitch the construction plan to local council developers and construction site managers. I improved at CAD and model making as well as team working and presenting/debating.

Senior Space School UK

Space industry programme with Lockheed Martin scholarship in partnership with the University of Leicester,

Engaged in engineering team projects:

  • constructing a rocket and moving rover payload which we succeeded in launching and landing in an annual competition.
  • built and tested ablative heat shields using metal sheets at the National Space Centre ran by the National Space Agency.

Attended lecture courses including an Airbus Engineering Space Dynamics course on: orbital and altitude control systems of satellites; angular momentum, Kepler's laws and ellipses in Hohmann Transfer.

Participated in a Lockheed Martin Conference to showcase upcoming projects from 2019.

Operated the University of Leicester Observatory in the Oadby village campus, calibrating the telescope and its software.

Mentored by PhD students to follow their research paper on Comparing Star Formations in Low Redshift Galaxies in Hubble’s Sequence H-Alpha. From which I built an appreciation of the challenge of research with the experience of service and technical proposals to book the use of European observatories and acquiring high precision filters to search for specific radiation.
